If you have ever dreamed of sailing across the waves on a sailboat, the Lake City Yacht Club Sailing School may just be the answer to your dreams! This summer LCYC Sailing School continues its tradition of teaching new sailors the basics of small boat seamanship. Join the more than 35 sailors who have participated in these local classes beginning in 2012 and continued every year since. This is a fantastic way to gain both classroom knowledge and on the water instruction to give you the confidence in the finer arts of sailing.
Learn to Sail on Beautiful Lake Pepin
LCYC Sailing School June 18-19, 2016 9:00-5:00 each day
Lake City Beach-Ohuta Park
The Sailing School uses Sunfish boats as their primary boat of instruction. The responsiveness of the boats, together with their easily understandable rigging, provide an excellent learning platform for the beginning sailor. They have also, however, in the past been able to give some of our more advanced students opportunities to sail on some of our larger keel boats. Don’t worry if some of the terminology seems foreign, you will learn all of this in class.
Each class member will spend part of their Sailing School time with an instructor in one of the LCYC Sunfish sailboats, getting to know the points of sail, learning to turn (or “tack”) the sailboat into the wind and learning how to bring the boat to a safe stop on the beach. Once class members become comfortable with their sailing skills, they will be given the opportunity to take the Sunfish out on the lake themselves, under the close eye of instructors who will be on-hand in a safety dingy.
The LCYC teaches the annual Sailing School as part of its effort to encourage the sport of sailing and give back to the local community. When the American Red Cross, who had elected to stop teaching sailing, approached the LCYC to determine if it would take over its sailing school in Lake City and maintain the Sunfish, it was a natural decision for the sailing club to make.
This summer classes will be held June 18-19, 2016 from 9AM – 5PM each day at Lake City Beach-Ohuta Park in Lake City, MN. The cost for the Sailing School is $125 for the two days of sailing, the US Sailing Association textbook and the use of the LCYC Sunfish. Minimum age requirement is 16 years old, and all students must pass a basic swim check the first day of class.
