These shoes rock! Very breathable, dry quickly and all day comfort. Who could ask for anything more?
I’ve had these shoes from Harken Sport for one complete northern latitude season now (45 degrees north and too short to be sure) and so far am extremely pleased. These shoes are made from 100% man made materials and so are very easy to take care of. I do remove the foot beds to facilitate quick drying, but that is it. One nice benefit of their easy care is when your feet get warm a quick dunk it the water is all it takes to cool your heels, so to speak. I would not do this with my traditional leather boat shoes.
They use Harken’s one way drainage system that drains water away from the foot through a nine point system that does not allow water and debris to reenter the shoe. If you hop out of the boat in shallow water though, you can expect sand and small pebbles to find their way into your shoe. I think they are coming in through the relatively large holes in the heel area. However, these same holes evacuate water from the shoe almost instantly when you exit the water, so its a trade off I can live with.
As far as grip goes, I’ve not owned a grippier shoe for deck work. Back on shore these same grips seem to almost clean themselves, even though I try not to wear them on shore. They have a secure elastic lacing system, one quick tug and they are ready to go. A good toe bumper up front, as well.
I purchased mine from Mauri Pro Sailing last spring, it was my first purchase from them and recommend them highly. Fair pricing and quick service.
Over all, I highly recommend these shoes for a deck shoe, The come in other colors and also in ladies sizes too. My wife is planning on picking up a pair for next season.
Good report you got in this article. It would be wonderful to read a bit further regarding that issue. Thank you for telling that information.
Good article thanks!
yes we’ve had 2 pair of these shoes with the bottoms falling off, harken replaced the 1st and the 2nd delaminated into the 2nd season, we live in Caribbean where it’s hot all the time so don’t buy these expecting to get more than a season if you live in the tropics ! !
I live in the northern latitudes, so my pair has held together fine. They did loose their grip after two seasons though, but I have yet to find a pair of boat shoes that doesn’t. I have a pair of Keens that are going into their third season, but I think they will be doing so as house shoes. I think the soft material on boat shoes required for gripping wet surfaces are like grippy tires, they work great, but just not for very long. Now my feet on the other hand, they seem like they grip pretty good and I’ve had them for quite some time now.
