Here is a beauty I found this morning. She is an 1975 Islander 36 listed on the Left Coast in Oceanside CA. I really like the topside paint, it goes perfectly with the sailboats name, Cayenne. I wonder which came first? Hmmmm.
Anyway, I’ve noticed that I keep returning to a handful of sailboats that I like. Mostly Robert Perry designs. But this one by Allen Gurney just seems like a great sailboat. I’ve talked with several sailors that have sailed on Islander 36’s and all have said that they sail like a dream. Of course the fact that they are all quite affordable is a very attractive feature as well. My own experience with our Islander 28 gives me great confidence in the quality of construction and overall workmanship from Islander Yachts even though they have been out of business since the mid 80’s.
Recently I read Mr. Perry’s book, Yacht Design According to Perry, and in the chapter devoted to Islander Yachts, he talked about the fact that the Islander 36 was the first sailboat with an interior that could be typified as being plush. Before this sailboats interiors were more like “the boys cabin in the woods.
So today, Cayenne, the Islander 36 from Oceanside is my Boat de Jour.
Hi Eric,
That is me sailing that fine vessel. I owned her for about 4-1/2 years and put about 9000 miles under keel out of Oceanside, and around Southern California in that time. She did truly sail like a dream. The picture was taken by a dockmate on a Tayana 46. Unfortunately, I can’t help you with your quandary of name or color first. She was red when I bought her in 2005. Thank you for posting the picture, brings back great memories!
